8 states to send payments this month
Eight states are preparing to roll out direct payments to help residents amid runaway inflation that has strained household budgets across the country and left Americans struggling with the prices of food, gasoline and housing.
This month’s relief comes after the Commerce Department announced a second straight quarter of economic contraction last week – what many analysts use as a simple definition of a “recession”, despite the administration’s pushback. from President Joe Biden and some economists who want to wait for the National Bureau of Economic Research to make the official call.
As U.S. officials debate the health of the economy, some governors are issuing rebates to help ease inflationary pressures. Find out below which states and residents are eligible for payment in August:
Delaware
Delaware has issued one-time $300 relief checks to every adult resident who has filed their 2021 tax returns since May and is continuing to roll out the payments over the summer. Joint filers will each receive a payment. No further action is required to receive payment. Residents can check for status updates on their discount here.

“This relief is intended to help Delawares deal with higher prices at the grocery store and at the gas pump,” the state’s website says.
Florida
Last month, Gov. Ron DeSantis said about 59,000 low-income families in the state would be eligible to receive a one-time payment of $450 per child, “to offset the costs of rising inflation, in especially as a new school year approaches.
“This one-time payment can be used for everything from buying diapers to refueling at the pump,” DeSantis wrote in a letter to families.
The Florida Department of Children and Families offers financial assistance to families who receive any of the following services through the department:
- Temporary cash assistance (temporary assistance to families in need)
- Fund for family/unrelated caregivers
- Has an adopted and/or foster child in the household
The checks are part of the Hope Florida: A Pathway to Prosperity program, led by Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis. Eligible families should not apply for the benefit as payments are automatically mailed and have already started rolling out.
Georgia
Since May, Georgia has sent one-time refunds to taxpayers who filed their state returns for 2020 and 2021 in the amount of $250 for individuals, $500 for joint filers, and $375 for chief filers. housework. The refund will be based on the filing status of the 2020 tax return.
Partial-year residents or people who owe taxes, child support, or other payments may also receive a smaller relief check.
The Georgia Department of Revenue anticipates delays due to the volume of refunds. According to its website, the department will issue most refunds in early August for returns that were filed before April 18 this year.
Hawaii
Hawaii Governor David Ige recently signed a tax cut into law that would roll out $300 checks for residents who earn less than $100,000 — or $200,000 for joint filers — with dependents also eligible.
People who won more than $100,000 (or $200,000 for co-filers) will receive a one-time $100 relief check.
The state tax department said payments would be mailed out at the end of August.

Illinois
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s estimated $1.83 billion relief package, the Illinois Family Relief Plan, went into effect July 1. The plan includes income and property tax refunds as well as a temporary reduction of several sales taxes.
“Amid historic inflation rates, the people of our state deserve to know they are not alone. We are with them,” Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton said in a press release. “When our residents feel the brunt of buying food, gas, and making ends meet, Illinois is taking action to ease the burden.”
While Comptroller Susana Mendoza does not expect to reduce income tax refund checks until September, the state has already begun rolling out property tax refunds. Homeowners earning less than $250,000, or $500,000 if filing jointly, will be eligible for an amount equal to the property tax credit they were entitled to on their 2021 returns, up to a maximum of $300. These payments are sent automatically.
Indiana
Indiana has sent payments of $125 to all taxpayers, regardless of income, since May.
Gov. Eric Holcomb is urging lawmakers to send a second payment, worth $225 per taxpayer, but his calls have been rebuffed by Senate Republicans, who are proposing an alternative plan that would suspend some sales taxes instead.
Minnesota
Frontline workers in Minnesota are entitled to a one-time payment of $750. Checks started going out late last month, but applications had to be sent in by July 22.
New Mexico
Several discounts have been approved in New Mexico. While eligible taxpayers already received the first installment of their $500 refund in June, the second installment is expected to arrive in August.
“With rising consumer prices weighing on household budgets across the country, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Legislature in 2022 approved multiple refunds for New Mexico taxpayers, as well as economic assistance payments to New Mexico residents who are not required to file taxes,” reads the state’s Tax and Revenue website.
