National Wings Day 2022: Free Wings at Buffalo Wild Wings, Hooters, Zaxby’s
According to the National Chicken Council, Americans eat more than 1.4 billion wings during the Super Bowl weekend alone, and the pandemic has only fueled our passion for poultry. (So much so that a wing shortage was reported in 2021.)
“Demand for chicken wings has skyrocketed since the pandemic began,” NCC spokesman Tom Super said in a statement earlier this year, noting the “shift from sit-down restaurants to take-out and fast service” during closings.
National Wings Day is July 29, when bars, restaurants and fast food outlets across the country offer deals on wings — both bone-in and bone-out.
Ironically, the chicken wing has always been a largely overlooked part of the bird, usually discarded or used in soups or broths. The idea of frying them and brushing them with hot sauce is generally credited to the Bellissimo family, who ran the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, in the early 1960s.
Or so the Buffalo town fathers believed in 1977, when they issued a proclamation celebrating bar co-owner Frank Bellissimo and declaring July 29 Chicken Wings Day.
The Anchor Bar is still here, but you can celebrate National Wings Day almost anywhere in the United States. Below are some of the places where you can get free or discounted wings on July 29.
